Background of the Study
Political thuggery, involving the use of violence, intimidation, and coercion to influence election outcomes, has long been a major issue in Nigerian elections (Eze & Ojukwu, 2023). In Suleja Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, political thuggery has been a significant concern, particularly during elections, as political parties and candidates often resort to violent tactics to gain an advantage (Bello & Adamu, 2024). The presence of political thugs discourages voter participation, particularly among marginalized groups such as women, the elderly, and first-time voters, as it creates an atmosphere of fear and insecurity (Oluwaseun & Ibraheem, 2023). This study aims to investigate the impact of political thuggery on voter turnout in Suleja, exploring the ways in which violence and intimidation affect the willingness of citizens to participate in the electoral process. The research will also explore potential solutions to mitigate the effects of political thuggery and promote peaceful elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political thuggery has had a detrimental effect on voter turnout in many Nigerian LGAs, and Suleja is no exception. The use of violence and intimidation during elections has led to a decrease in voter participation. This study will examine the extent to which political thuggery impacts voter turnout in Suleja and explore the possible solutions to reduce its influence on the electoral process.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
Political thuggery significantly decreases voter turnout in Suleja Local Government Area.
There is a strong negative relationship between political violence and voter participation in Suleja.
Strategies such as increased security and voter education can mitigate the effects of political thuggery on voter turnout.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide a critical examination of the impact of political thuggery on voter turnout in Suleja, offering insights into how violence and intimidation can deter citizens from participating in elections. The findings will help guide policymakers, electoral authorities, and civil society organizations in developing strategies to address political violence and ensure higher voter participation in future elections.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on political thuggery and its impact on voter turnout in Suleja Local Government Area, Niger State, specifically during the 2023 elections. It will not cover other forms of electoral violence or political violence outside the election period. Limitations include difficulties in gathering data from respondents who may fear retribution for discussing political thuggery or violence.
